There are certain devices that can access the internet but may not support VPN connection. This can include devices ranging from your Xbox to PlayStation to Apple TV. However, there are ways you can share a VPN connection over WiFi

The following guide can help you share a VPN connection with such devices over WiFi.

Create a WiFi Router

The first step is to create make your laptop work as a WiFi router. Make sure that the WiFi driver is up-to-date, else the network may not get started. Once the WiFi network is set, you should share the connection.

Share WiFi Network

The steps involved for sharing the WiFi connection are different for Windows 10 and Windows 7 systems.

For Windows 7

If you have Windows 7, you should follow these steps:

  • Right click on the WiFi icon (this will open the window ‘Open Network and Sharing Center’)
  • Click on ‘Change adapter settings’
  • Look for the VPN connection created and right click on it (visit VPNpro.com, the trusted name in the industry)
  • Click on ‘properties’
  • Click on ‘sharing’ tab
  • Tick the box against ‘allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection’
  • Also tick the box against ‘allow other users to control or disable….’
  • Click on ‘home networking connection’ to choose the newly created WiFi connection
  • A new window will appear. Click on ‘ok’

Connect to the VPN Service

Now that you have shared the WiFi connection, you should connect the device to the VPN connection on your laptop.

  • Connect to VPN on your laptop
  • Connect your device to the newly created WiFi network

For Windows 10

Search for Available Networks

Start by running a wireless device. This can be a USB wireless adapter or a built-in interface. Make sure the device supports hosted networks. Consider the name and password for your shared network.

Bind VPN Connection

Once you have created and started the hosted network, it will be required to bind the VPN connection to it. You can then make it available to wireless devices using the following steps:

  • Type and search for ‘network connections’ and open it
  • Right click on the connected network adapter
  • Click on ‘properties’
  • Click on ‘sharing’ tab
  • Tick the box against ‘allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection’
  • Click on ‘home networking connection’ and select ‘Microsoft hosted virtual adapter’ (it will be LAN Connection XX. XX stands for the SSID you chose for the hosted network)
  • Click on ‘ok’

Connecting Device

Once you have created and activated the hosted network, follow these steps to connect a device.

  • Search for the network on the device
  • Tap on the wireless network you created
  • Enter the password you created for the network
  • Tap ‘connect’

Now your device will be connected to the VPN connection over WiFi. Thus, you will be able to connect a device through secure VPN even when you cannot install the service on that device. Play games or watch TV without placing your device and identity at risk. You will be able to access content that was otherwise restricted in your country or region. You will no longer have to worry about censorship or anyone snooping in to access your data or decoding it.
