For video editing I personally use Virtual Dub. You can change the format of the video file with a great compression, convert video files to image, cut some scenes from the film and etc. In this tutorial, I will describe two most useful options:
Download Virtual Dub and install it
Virtual Dub looks like this:
How to change the video format? Just follow the instructions below.
1. Open video file with Virtual Dub, File->Open video file…
2. Go to Video tab and press Compression…
Here you can select video compression, also you can see the video codec information. Remember FOURCC code in codec information
Click OK
3. In Virtual Dub you can cut parts of the movie and compress only that part. For this you must select option below
![]()
4.Go to File , click on Save AVI… , When the window appear set parameters like shown below, just add your FOURCC code(file extension), in this example I compress in to .xvid
Wait for the compression to finish, it will take a little longer, depending of the file size. It looks like this
When compression finishes, open your changed file and enjoy.
Virtual Dub offers one more interesting and useful option. You can cut scene from video file and convert it to image. Follow instructions below:
1. Open video file with Virtual Dub, File->Open video file…
2. Select the scene from the movie, which you wish to convert to an image. Move the slider to the beginning of the scene and click Mark In button , then move to the end of the scene and click Mark Out button .
3. Go to File tab, click Export , then Image sequence … Now appears Image output filter, where you can choose image format , directory where you will save images.
Click OK and wait Wait to finish compression. That is it.
